Chances are, if you’ve ever visited me in Portland, I’ve at least tried to get us out of the city and into the amazing surrounding area at least for a half-day. Wine country is an hour away in every direction. The coast is an hour and a half. For first-timers to this region, it’s a given that we’re going on some sort of day trip.
A couple of weeks ago, east coast visitors joined us here in Portland, so naturally we had to make this coast-to-coast visit a legit one and actually see the ocean. Those of you in the Pacific Northwest know how stunning this coastline is. Those of you not? Here, take a peek.

So, what do you do on the way to and at the coast? Stop at Camp 18 Restaurant for breakfast. I personally recommend the giant blueberry pancakes. Drive another 24 miles, hit the beach, and head south towards Cannon Beach. I hear Seaside is nice, I’ve just never actually stopped there.
Once in Cannon Beach, grab coffee at The Sleepy Monk or Insomnia Coffee.

Sweet tooth? Check out JJ’s Sweet Shop at The Picnic Basket for about a million (or so it seems) flavors of salt-water taffy, chocolate-covered pretzels, ice cream, and many, many other sweet treats.

Once you’re at the beach, play. Play some more. Walk around barefoot. Touch things.

Laugh as your BF braves freezing cold water to find another area of perfectly smooth sand, and poses smugly (and rightfully so!) for having succeeded.

And when east coast friends come to visit? Hug the shit out of them, feed them coffee and pancakes, and frolic around the beach, and take pictures of the whole thing.

[BFF photos: top left, Brad visited from DC; bottom left, Megan returned to Portland for a couple of weeks after moving to Virginia back in June. The Oregon coast rejoiced at her return (as did I).]
Grin gleefully yourself because it’s just so damn pretty out there.
